In Ramadan, the month of mercy and forgiveness, Allah (SWT) provides a compassionate way to fulfill your duty if you are legitimately unable to fast: Fidya.
Al-Yusr Organization offers a trusted and simple way to pay your Fidya.
Our commitment to efficiency ensures your contribution reaches the hungry and impoverished in conflict-torn regions.
Understanding Your Obligation: Fidya vs. Kaffarah
- It is important to clearly distinguish Fidya (compensation) from Kaffarah (atonement), as they serve fundamentally different purposes.
- Fidya is a religious obligation for a Muslim who is unable to fast due to a valid, long-term excuse such as chronic illness or advanced age, with no prospect of making the fasts up later.
- The fulfillment of Fidya is straightforward: the person must feed one needy person for each day missed.
- In contrast, Kaffarah is a more severe form of atonement required when a fast is intentionally broken without a valid Sharia excuse.
- Kaffarah involves a heavier form of atonement, such as fasting for 60 consecutive days or feeding 60 poor people, depending on the ruling.
Who is Obligated and The Amount Due
- Fidya is required for every Muslim who is genuinely unable to fast during Ramadan due to a long-term inability:
- Old Age: When fasting becomes excessively difficult due to advanced age.
- Chronic Illness: When a medical condition prevents fasting and is expected to be permanent.
- Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: When fasting poses a genuine risk to the mother or child (it is advised to consult a scholar for specific rulings).
The Monetary Rate
- The traditional obligation is to provide staple food (such as 1.5 kg of flour or grain) to a needy person for each day missed.
- Our Current Fidya Rate: $5 per missed fast (This provides one person with two nutritious, complete meals.)
- While the core requirement of Fidya is to feed the needy, the vast majority of scholars permit the payment of its monetary equivalent, as it is the most efficient way to deliver targeted aid.
